According to current rules for postgraduate training at KI, all students registered on July 1, 1998 or later, are guaranteed at least a sum equivalent to the studentallowance/doctoral grant (utbildningsbidrag) for the first two years and paid postgraduate position (doktorandtjänst) for the last two years.
The doctoral grant is currently set at 15.500 SEK/month. In addition to this, many postgraduate students (about 70%) are employed part-time (usually 20% of full time) as teaching assistants. Grounds for employment as teaching assistant can be teaching, supervision, administrative tasks, or other duties at the department/ section/research group. Such duties are not included in the individual study plan, and should not be considered to be postgraduate education. The salary for teaching assistants is usually around 19.000 SEK/month for full time employment, and is negotiable.
Postgraduate students can have a paid position during the whole education, and all postgraduate students are entitled to a paid position during the last 2 years of the postgraduate education. As of 01/10/2008, the minimum salary for postgraduate positions is 20.500 SEK/month or 22.500 SEK/month after half-time control. See the local ALFA agreement for KI at the KI intranet or the Short description of new minimum salaries for PhD students for more information (at present, only in swedish). In the table, only minimum salaries are given and we recommend all students to negotiate their salary with their supervisor or head of the section/department.

Job Security Agreement / Trygghetsavtalet
Support from this agreement means that in case of unemployment after your postgraduate education you will get help from “Trygghetsstiftelsen” in finding a new employment. You can also receive supplementary unemployment benefit if the regular unemployment benefit (A-kassa) does not amount to 80% of your old salary. If you find a new job that pays a lower salary you may also receive income supplements.
To be able to get these benefits from Trygghetsstiftelsen you have to be registered. This is done by KI centrally. It is therefore important to notify the staff department when you know that your position at KI will come to an end. This is done through a special form (see link below) that you leave to your salary administrator at the department, who will forward this to KI Staff department.
